Technical English II - Content and Conclusion

We have seen that an introduction plays an important role in an essay. The thesis statement is the main idea that runs through the essay. If I say that a 'Thesis Statement ' is like a handshake that invites the reader to go through the essay, a conclusion is compelling the reader to revisit the essay.

A strong stand taken by the writer in the introduction forms a firm foundation:

"Students will be better prepared for the future if Financial Education becomes an indispensable part of the curriculum."

Let's discuss the Body and Conclusion of an Essay with a simple example.

Body Paragraph- two paragraphs elaborate on the content with the help of examples.

Paragraph 1:

Our present education system undoubtedly helps students comprehend literature, solve trigonometry problems and understand photosynthesis. However, students are often inexperienced when they encounter the real world after graduation, in terms of managing their finances. Mathematics, for example, is limited to tedious equations, formula, and theorems. Can this prepare students to be financially sound?

Paragraph 2:

Financial education, on the other hand, develops knowledge related to personal finance and investments that can elevate the quality of a student's life. Financial studies keep them well informed on how to avoid debts and unnecessary consumption of products. Planning the budget, following up on the budget and the knowledge of interest rates will help students flourish and become a valuable asset for the community; This, in turn, will plummet the suicide rate which is caused due to low level of financial awareness.

Conclusion:

Therefore a shift in the ideology of education is of paramount importance in today's world.
Mathematics by itself is inadequate for preparing students to face challenges in life. An integrated study of Mathematics, it's application and Financial topics will broaden the outlook of students and give them a firm footing.

Note:
As you can see from the above example, the two paragraphs open with a 'Topic Sentence' that is related to the main theme. The Conclusion restates the 'Thesis Statement'. This completes the loop and makes it a compact essay.

Now it's your turn!
Write an essay on the following:

Who is to blame for the obesity epidemic?

Ms Shashi Prabha
Assistant Professor
BNM Institute of Technology
